Hostmantis review: The best of both worlds?6 min read

Last Updated on:

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Hostmantis hosts over 10 000 domains from their nameserver across the world. The company itself is almost 10 years old and was founded in September of 2010. While they are quite small, they are also pretty affordable with entry prices recurring at $1.49/mo. But the question we’re all asking, is this the best of both worlds when it comes to pricing and performance?

According to our monitoring service, Hostmantis has only had a downtime of 1 minute during the span of 3 months. That’s 99.999% uptime! Their performance isn’t bad either and the average WordPress site loads in just under 400ms.

Their shared hosting plans don’t offer unlimited features though, and their entry plan comes with just 2 GB SSD. But with the price tag, you can’t really complain and since they offer a generous 30-day money-back guarantee you would simply be able to request a refund if you require something else.

Fast Page Load Time – 400ms

Fast page load times are essential for any site really, especially when it comes to business ones. Having a slow site can result in both lower revenue and rankings, not to mention the horrible user experience. We have all noticed how some websites are just really, really slow and how annoying that can be, and you wouldn’t want that to be your website or brand, would you?

On top of that, Page speed has been a ranking factor on google ever since 2010 and according to Sean Work, 40% of people abandon a website that takes more than 3 seconds to load.

Because its significance, we have gone ahead and set up a temporary WordPress site with Hostmantis, and tested the page speed of it from 8 different locations, across the globe:

Location First Visit Repeat Visit
New York, US490 ms 433 ms
Seattle, US460 ms420 ms
Amsterdam, NL800 ms 637 ms
London, UK831 ms 730 ms
Paris, France731 ms 521 ms
Tokyo, Japan4.2 sec 929 ms
Brisbane, Australia3.8 sec1.4 sec

The Best Uptime Record: 99.999%

Uptime is among the most important merit when choosing a web host, even more, important than speed since if the site is down the average load time goes up

Due to its importance, we have gone ahead and monitored Hostmantis’s uptime during the span of 12 whole months. Here’s the result:

Hostmantis 5-month average statistical uptime:

  • May 2020 average uptime: 100%
  • April 2020 average uptime: 100%
  • March 2020 average uptime: 100%
  • February 2020 average uptime: 100%
  • January 2020 average uptime: 99.99%

In other words, this means that your website is down on average 10 seconds per month.

This uptime is the best that we’ve tested so far and is far better than other providers such as SiteGround.

Quick information about our monitoring tool:

Our monitoring tool visits the website every minute, every hour, 24/7 a day, and reports any downtime before calculating an average at the end of each month. As a result of this, we are able to see it’s true uptime, rather than if we just noticed it manually.

99.9% Uptime Guarantee

Hostmantis states on its terms of service page that it has an uptime guarantee of 99.9%. This is quite good, but according to our records, it’s not like you’re going to be claiming this anytime soon!

Their terms are quite confusing though and it states that it’s not valid “where HostMantis.com has no direct influence, such as backbone provider failures, fibre-optic main line cuts..”

You might also think that this 99.9% uptime guarantee is counted in downtime per month, but that’s not the case either. They sate that it’s the time during a given 12-month period meaning that your site needs to be down for about 8 hours before you’re eligible for compensation.

30-day Money-back Guarantee

According to the Hostmantis refund policy, they offer a full 30-day money-back guarantee. This is comparable to SiteGround and Bluehost who also offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

There are some exceptions to this refund though. For one, addons such as SSL certificates and domain names do not qualify for this. The same thing is true for other extras.

Voiding their terms of service also instantly voids any chances of getting a refund.

Customer Support – ok

Hostmantis customer support is okay, although I would really like if they had live chat as an option. This is simply not the case currently so you’re stuck with email and ticket. This is not to say that it’s bad, that’s not the case at all.

They’re great when it comes to technical support.

I had a simple issue where I had entered the incorrect details when trying to connect to the database and they told me this straight away within 10 minutes of me making a response.

On their website, they claim to have 24/7/365 Expert Technical Support although with the many support tickets I have opened it seems as during the night time their support is a bit slower with average response times around 3 hours.

They also offer a knowledge base for self-support that they tend to link to in the tickets with many great articles.
